Many thanks

Although I haven't posted in some time - off having life happen to me in other areas and all that - I have always maintained a link back to Oort-Cloud from whatever online project I happened to be poking around with.

Something special happened here, and hopefully will continue to happen. It was a nice way to post some written experiments and get honest and encouraging feedback on. It was also a great place to read some very original and brain-tickling ideas.

That's what I got from it. Thanks guys.
I don't think so. But things

I don't think so. But things did slow down there for a while, so it may be taking people some time to get back into the swing of keeping up with new posts.

I've been on the road, so I'm hoping to catch up with everything this weekend and try (I also hope) to offer some helpful feedback.

Out of curiosity, what do you folks think of the story's pace? Too slow, too fast, or reasonable?

I was attending a lecture on

I was attending a lecture on RNA's part in aging and according to the researcher, aging is actually an anti-cancer adaptation. We all get cancer frequently, but cancer cells age faster than normal cells and usually die off before causing significant trouble. Apparently, there is a threshold regarding the number of infected cells cancer requires to overcome this defense.

In some of the studies, they hindered RNA's aging and the cancer cells rapidly infected the entire cluster.

I may reword the dialogue, but I try to throw terms and concepts around as if everyone in the period recognizes it as common sense to give a world a certain feel. Kinda hit or miss.

Very interesting world

Very interesting world you've set up in this segment. However, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around Lisonse's speech near the end. I don't see the connection between the 'immortality' comment and the mass die-off.

Maybe I'm just missing something very obvious...

We're willing to consider

We're willing to consider any and all ideas at this point. You may be right that the already existing discussions can cover OC's needs, but suggestions never hurt!

The good thing about Drupal (which is what we used to build this site) is that it allows us to add many common features without too much trouble. We just want to be sure we add the right ones (meaning, the ones the community would like to have and use).

An instant messaging board

An instant messaging board might be nice to discuss ideas, but most of that can already be done in the discussions part and I'm not sure there are enough people to warrant whatever the cost might be.

If I had to guess about why it's been slow, I suspect it's because classes have started again. That's certainly been killing any of my writing.

Lot of exposition there! But

Lot of exposition there! But the Officer's frustration seems to be bringing matters to a head, so I'm looking forward to part four.

I have a feeling the Admiral isn't going to make the Officer's life any easier though.

picking at one nit

I like the story so far, but the opening's got no hook. This is something I've heard many times at my writers' group meetings, especially from writers of SF and/or short stories. We all have the desire to start our stories with a vivid description of our lovely new world. But we've only a moment to draw the reader in and keep them interested.

I've had to rework a lot of openings. But like me, you have everything you really need in the first two paragraphs, and the material simply needs to be presented in a different order. Now that I'm concentrating on stories of 7k words or less, I'm beginning to understand how important it is that a story must move, and move quickly.
